The Southern Paiute language a history

Pipe Spring National Monument , will be hosting  a brown bag talk on the Southern Paiute language a Native American Nation that were victims of euro-american encroachment and how this relationship almost depleted their methods of passing down cultural information orally. Topics covered will be the different dialects spoken by each Southern Paiute band. The origination of the language and it’s Uto-Aztecan roots and dialect and also how the cause of cultural assimilation and traumatization resulted in almost the loss of the Southern Paiute language. Also covered will be how today the language is being reintroduced within the bands by hosting language schools that are open for all ages. This lecture will be given by Ranger Benn Pikyavit a member of the Kaibab Paiute tribe and elder of the Southern Paiute Nation.
