Expert session “Indigenous languages of the North, Siberia and the Far East as the basis of cultural heritage of multinational Russia”
The expert session was held on the 1st Forum of the Northern Women, 5-7 June 2023, Saint-Petersburg. The Forum’s main mission is to strengthen the role of Indigenous Women from the North, Siberia and the Russian Far East in building a sustainable, creative future for indigenous peoples based on traditional values.
The native language is the treasury of the cultural memory of the people and the basis of their national self-identification. Indigenous women play a special role – the custodian of traditional knowledge and culture; she is responsible for preserving the cultural identity and spiritual well-being of the family.
Preservation of the native language depends primarily on the family and, mainly, on the woman. It is no coincidence that the native language is called mother tongue , since it is the mother who plays the main role in transmitting the native language and knowledge about the traditions to her children.
Nowadays, woman performs a wider range of social roles – she is an educator, teacher and mentor, she tries not only to preserve, but also to revitalize the natural language environment.
