The exhibition “Enlighteners of the Volga Peoples” opened in Ulyanovsk as part of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages
From November 10 to December 25, 2023, the exhibition “Enlighteners of the Volga Peoples”, which is dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the birth of I.Ya. Yakovlev, is open in the small exhibition hall of the Historical and Memorial Center-Museum of I.A. Goncharov in the city of Ulyanovsk of the Russian Federation.
The outstanding educator Ivan Yakovlevich Yakovlev (years of life 1848 — 1930) headed the Simbirsk Chuvash school. In 1871, he developed the Chuvash alphabet and published the first ABC books and textbooks of the Chuvash language.
The exhibition project was organized as part of the events dedicated to the International Decade of Indigenous Languages of the Russian Federation.
The exhibition presents materials about outstanding Simbirsk teachers of the second half of the XIX century – I.Ya. Yakovlev, I.N. Ulyanovsk, V. I. Formakovsky, A.F. Yurtov and many others.
The exhibition is based on materials from the collections of the Ulyanovsk Regional Museum of Local Lore named after I.A. Goncharov: photographs, documents, periodicals. The most valuable are the materials of the Chuvash school, photographs of public schools, a Commendation sheet of the graduate of the second male parish school P.S. Zhukov, signed by the director of public schools of the Simbirsk province I.N. Ulyanov.
