Join us for Gohwééh dóó Bááh Łikáni (Coffee and donuts)! This time will be used to focus on speaking the Navajo language, however, there are several indigenous languages of the southwest and we encourage speakers to join us to speak their Native language.

Auf Empfehlung des Ständigen Forums für indigene Fragen hat die Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen das Jahr 2019 zum Internationalen Jahr der indigenen Sprachen ausgerufen. Wie das Forum feststellt, sind 40 Prozent der geschätzten 6.700 weltweit gesprochenen Sprachen vom Verschwinden bedroht. Die meisten dieser gefährdeten Sprachen sind indigene Sprachen, womit auch die Kulturen und Wissenssysteme, zu denen sie gehören, gefährdet sind. Indigene Bevölkerungsgruppen sind oft politisch, geographisch und sozial isoliert und können mit ihrer vielseitigen Kultur und ihrem Wissen nicht zu unserer globalisierten Welt beitragen. Das Hochschulbüro für Internationales der Leibniz Universität Hannover, das Konfuzius-Institut Hannover und das Centre for Atlantic and Global Studies freuen sich, zwei Filme zu präsentieren, die auf die Themen Isolation und Sprache aufbauen: die gefeierte Dokumentation „Thinking Like a Mountain“ von Alexander Hick und die Romanverfilmung „Der Seidenfächer“.

Hock E Aye Vi Edgar Heap of Birds is an artist and an advocate for indigenous communities worldwide. His text-based work includes multidisciplinary forms of public art messages, large-scale drawings, Neuf Series acrylic paintings, prints, works in glass, and monumental porcelain enamel on steel outdoor sculpture. His most recent works address injustices and current views of Native American people, illuminating the struggles within the lives of Native Americans, as well as acknowledging Native Americans’ cultural differences through coupling positive and negatives, the past and the present though language.

Créssida Contemporary Dance makes their New York debut with the world premiere of Naj (House), created by the troupe’s Artistic Director Lourdes Luna in close collaboration with Mexican-American composer Carlo Nicolau. The piece is inspired by Mayan poet Briseida Cuevas Cob’s “A yáax tuupl” (The First Earring) and offers a contemporary focus of Mayan worldview. Créssida will also perform La primera piedra (The Foundation Stone), created by Roberto Olivan and directed by Lourdes Luna. This work approaches the current Mexican character and personal themes that pierce through borders. This performance is part of LaGuardia Performing Arts Center’s 2019-2020 Season. Music and choreography for Naj are co-commissioned, co-produced and co-presented by Celebrate Mexico Now Festival and LaGuardia Community College.

Celebrate Mexico Now Festival has partnered with the Center for Fiction for a screening and panel discussion on the importance and challenges of translating indigenous languages. The conversation will include the screening of 68 Voices, 68 Hearts, a series of animated short films that retell Mexican indigenous stories in their native tongues. This panel will feature filmmaker and creator of 68 Voices, 68 Hearts Gabriela Badillo; Américo Mendoza-Mori, Quechua and Spanish professor at the University of Pennsylvania; and Mirian Masaquiza, Social Affairs Officer at the Indigenous Peoples and Development Branch of the UN’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

El Instituto de Ciencias Antropológicas, el Instituto de Lingüística y el Museo Etnográfico de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires convocan a las Jornadas de Investigaciones sobre Lenguas Indígenas en Argentina, que tendrá lugar en la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires los días 7 y 8 de noviembre de 2019, con sede en el Museo Etnográfico. Estas jornadas tienen el objetivo poner en común la situación de las lenguas y pueblos indígenas del país y reflexionar sobre el rol de la investigación lingüística para su visibilización desde distintas perspectivas (la documentación pasada y presente, la lingüística antropológica y la sociolingüística y los estudios sobre contacto y educación, entre otras).

Pūkana: Moments in Māori performance Te ihi, te wehi, te wana, will showcase and celebrate excellence in Māori performance, as represented in the collections of the Alexander Turnbull Library. Pūkana will range far and wide to give visitors a sense of the ihi (essential force / personal magnetism), wehi (a response of awe in reaction to ihi) and wana (exhilaration), inherent to Maori performance.
