Living Arctic: Tradition and Sustainability on the Top of the Earth

This exhibition showcases the symbiotic relationship between Indigenous communities and their homelands around the Circumpolar North by exploring the complex role of sustainable technologies in contemporary lifeways.

The languages of Arctic peoples serve as important connectors between people, ecosystem, and place. For example, the multitude of words for snow and ice exist to describe the various states of consistency, color, and location. Such descriptive knowledge maintained in Indigenous languages is key to the success of subsistence living among Arctic peoples. Due to colonization Arctic languages have been lost and many of them are at risk.
