Ivan Sandrin, a language activist from Yamal, told about the creation of an audio collection and cartoons in the Khanty language

As part of the program of the “Russian Nort” forum of youth of the indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation, Ivan Sandrin, a language activist from Shuryshkarsky district, Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, shared the history of the creation of the cultural and educational audio project “Tales of the Khanty people” and the “Khanty Mons” collection of cartoons. He twice received financial support for the implementation of the projects through participation in grant competitions of the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs.

Roman Kelchin, the first teacher of Ivan Sandrin, collected folk tales and told them at school. Many years later, Ivan found the forgotten manuscripts. He designed all the collected materials in the form of audio and comics.

Thanks to the project and its victory in the grant competition, Khanty children in nine schools of Shuryshkarsky district got the opportunity to read fairy tales in their native language.

Ivan plans to “revive” the comics and turn them into an animated movie.
