A Kaleidoscope of languages is the heritage of humanity
Every year on February 21, residents of different parts of our planet celebrate International Native Language Day, proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference in 1999.
National Library of the Chechen Republic named after. A.A. Aidamirov joined the celebration – on this day, a folk lesson “Language is the confession of the people, their soul and native way of life” took place in the department of literature in foreign languages.
Diana Usmanova, a teacher of Chechen language and literature at secondary school No. 2 in the village of Avtury conducted the lesson. The teacher and schoolchildren – seventh grade pupils – plunged into the fascinating world of the Chechen language. They guessed riddles, read proverbs and sayings, told excerpts from history, quoted national writers, and talked about the traditions and culture of the Chechens.
The schoolchildren prepared a small theatrical skit with a philosophical meaning – words can solve any misunderstanding and any conflicts that arise between people throughout life.
The staff of the department prepared a book exhibition “A Kaleidoscope of Languages is the Heritage of Humanity”, and Seda Dzhukurova, chief librarian, held a conversation-dialogue. The schoolchildren were able to get acquainted with the most popular works of Russian and foreign classics translated into the Chechen language.
Dzhakurova noted that languages are the most powerful tool for preserving and developing the material and spiritual heritage of the people. She told those present that the date of International Native Language Day was chosen to commemorate the events that took place in Dhaka (now the capital of Bangladesh) on February 21, 1952. On this day, students were killed by police bullets due to demonstration in defense of their native language Bengali, which they demanded to be recognized as one of the state languages of the country.
